Cherishing Little Dreams: How to Care for Merino Wool

Merino wool baby sleeping bags provide unmatched comfort for your little one's bedtime. Surprisingly, caring for merino wool is a breeze. Follow these easy steps to keep your baby's sleeping bag in tip top condition.

How to Care for your Merino

DO NOT SOAK OR BLEACH

USE DETERGENT SUITABLE FOR WOOL

  • Wash like colours together (e.g separate lights and darks)
  • Close all zippers to prevent snagging
  • Use warm or cool machine wash on a wool cycle
  • Use WOOL liquid wash
  • Do not use bleach or fabric softener
  • Do not soak your garment
  • Line dry garments

Detergent

USE DETERGENT SUITABLE FOR WOOL

A neutral, mild wool detergent will help to prolong the lifespan of your merino wool sleep sack.

Mild or neutral detergents have a relatively neutral pH level. Wool requires a pH neutral detergent. DO NOT ues heavy-duty detergents, “bio” detergents containing enzymes, or any detergents containing bleaches. Avoid using powder detergent, powder laundry boosters or chlorine bleach on wool as the pH is too high.

The main component of wool is a protein called keratin.
Enzymes are included in household laundry detergents to remove protein-based stains such as blood and grass stains. Unfortunately, proteases do not distinguish between stains and protein fibres. Washing wool with a detergent containing enzymes will degrade it.

Machine wash

When machine washing, remember to close any zip fasteners, select the wool cycle, and ensure that the temperature is set to a maximum of 40°C. It is important to use a mild liquid detergent that is suitable for wool - detergents containing enzymes will damage the wool fibres.

Drying

Merino wool is naturally water-repelling, allowing it to dry quickly. Where possible, we suggest flat drying or gently hanging garments for optimal care. Whilst it’s always better to dry naturally if you can, our merino wool can be tumble dried if required (always follow the label on the item though).

Stain removal

For the best chance of removing stains, rub liquid wool wash directly onto the stained area. Leave for 15 minutes and then proceed to wash as per instructions. For more stubborn stains you could also try applying a sard soap bar directly to the area ('normal' detergents typically contain enzymes which
can break down the wool so need to be avoided). Washing on a warm 40 degree wash will also be much more effective at removing any stains.

Odour resistant

Merino wool has a natural ability to prevent the build-up of bacteria and repel odours, therefore it really only needs washing when it has become ‘soiled’.
