Collection: Newborn

For newborn babies who need to be swaddled, our Merino Wool Swaddle Sack and Organic Cotton Swaddle Wrap offer two different, but effective, swaddling options. Using breathable, natural fibres, both newborn swaddles help your baby settle quickly and remain comfortable while they sleep.

How many newborn swaddles do I need?

We recommend to have two swaddles in the appropriate size so that you have a spare when one is in the wash. It might even be helpful to consider having a third on hand to use in case of emergencies!

How do I dress my baby for bed

How should I dress my baby underneath?

It is very important to ensure your baby does not overheat. The Joey merino swaddle has been designed to avoid the need for multiple loose layers. The table shown provides you with guidelines around how to dress your baby based on the room temperature.

What size newborn swaddle should I buy?

Our newborn swaddle wraps are available in one size and our Joey Merino wool swaddle sacks are available in two sizes; 0-3m (2.5-5kg) and 3-6m (5-9kg). For the best fit please select your swaddle according to your child's weight rather than their age.

Why swaddle my newborn baby?

Medical research suggests that swaddling is beneficial in helping newborns to sleep better. Swaddling a baby can calm their 'startle reflex' which wakes them up & disturbs their sleep. Our award-winning Joey Merino wool swaddle helps baby to settle quickly & establish a peaceful sleep routine. Importantly, it completely removes the need for loose blankets in the cot/bassinet, making it a safer option for babies.

Can my baby wear a swaddle in the capsule/car seat?

No, it is not safe to swaddle your child while using a capsule or car seat.

Are Billie + Bobbie swaddles healthy for baby's hip development?

Yes, all of our garments allow hips & legs to move freely to promote healthy hip joint development as guided by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.  When swaddling your newborn baby it is important to allow room around the hips for movement. Our Joey Merino wool swaddle sack has a bell-shaped bottom to allow a natural, safe sleep position.

What age can my newborn baby wear it from?

We recommend our Joey Merino Wool Swaddle Sack or Swaddle Wrap to be used from newborn until your little one has outgrown the swaddling phase. Refer to our size guide for weight guidelines.

When should I stop swaddling my baby?

It is essential to discontinue swaddling as soon as baby starts showing signs that they can begin to roll, usually between 4-6 months of age but sometimes younger.

Is it safe to use a sleeping bag over my swaddle?

No, it is not recommended to use a sleeping bag over a swaddle wrap or swaddle sack.

Can my baby sleep with their arms up in a Joey Merino wool swaddle sack?

A baby won't be able to get their arms all the way up to the sides of their head in a Joey Merino Wool Swaddle Sack. Instead, our swaddles are made from a stretchy fabric to allow for natural arm movement. We find that babies will wriggle their arms and hands into a position that is most comfortable for them.
