Navigating Daylight Saving Time with Your Baby or Toddler: Tips for a Smooth Transition

It's that time of year again when the nights are getting darker and the clocks go back. This year, the time changes on Sunday 7th April, 2024. As daylight saving approaches, parents often find themselves dreading the disruption it can bring to their little one's sleep schedule. However, with some strategic planning and patience, it is possible to ease the transition and minimise the impact on your baby or toddler's sleep.

Our top tips to help you navigate daylight saving time with your little one

  1. Gradually Adjust Bedtime:
Start adjusting your child's bedtime gradually in the days leading up to the time change. Shift bedtime by 15 minutes earlier each night for a few days before daylight saving time begins. This gradual approach can help your child's body clock adjust more smoothly to the new schedule.
  2. Use Light to Your Advantage:
Light plays a crucial role in regulating our body's internal clock. During the transition period, expose your child to natural sunlight in the morning and dim the lights in the evening to signal that it's time to wind down. This can help reinforce their circadian rhythm and promote better sleep patterns.
  3. Stick to a Consistent Routine:
Consistency is key when it comes to managing sleep disruptions. Stick to your child's regular nap and bedtime routines as much as possible, even during the transition period. Familiar rituals such as bath time, storytime, and cuddles can provide comfort and reassurance, making it easier for your little one to settle down for sleep.
  4. Be Patient and Flexible:
Adjusting to a new sleep schedule can be challenging for both parents and children. Be patient with your little one as they adapt to the changes, and be prepared for some disruptions in their sleep patterns. It may take a week or two for your child to fully adjust to the new schedule.
  5. Maintain a Comfortable Sleep Environment:
Create a sleep-friendly environment for your child by ensuring their room is dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature. Make sure your little one is comfortable and dressed appropriately for the room temperature. See our handy Temperature - What To Wear Guide

  • Swaddle Sack

"My newborn baby girl has been loving this sleep sack! As a first time Mum, it's so nice to know she can wear it through warm nights and not overheat, but it also keeps her cosy in cooler weather too. She can raise her hands up to her mouth if she feels like it while also being swaddled, which is great. We love it! Thank you so much!"

  • Best Sleeping Bag Ever!!

"Love this sleeping bag for our girl. She’s very comfortable in it and it helps keep her the perfect temperature, which is great with her eczema. The colours are lovely (had eucalyptus in the joey swaddle and now mist and biscotti). The design is very well thought out, easy to put her in and she’ll get heaps of use out of it as she grows. The fabric is lovely and the wool lining is so so soft, seems to just get softer with each wash too. Absolutely love them. Thank you so much!"

  • Best Sleeping Bag!!

"We bought one and noticed a huge change in our daughters sleep almost straight away! It keeps her at the perfect temp without constantly having to worry about togs and whether she is too hot/cold. As a FTM that was a hugeeee relief! The only downside was we bought 1 to try instead of getting the bundle straight away! We came back for a second one after a few weeks once we saw how great it was. My recommendation would be to just buy the 2pk bundle from the start! Love it!"
