Safer Sleep

It is essential to keep your baby safe while sleeping by providing a safe sleeping environment and dressing your little one appropriately.

A safe sleeping environment means that all potential dangers have been removed and the baby is sleeping in a safe place. The ideal place for a baby to sleep is in a safe cot, on a safe mattress, with safe bedding in a safe sleeping place, both night and day.

Research shows a clear link between overheating and an increased risk of sudden unexpected death in infancy, so it is important that parents and carers know how to dress baby for sleep.  To check, feel baby’s tummy, which should feel warm. Don’t worry if baby’s hands and feet feel cool – this is normal.  Dress your baby as you would dress yourself for the temperature of the room – comfortably warm, not too hot, not too cold.

If you swaddle your baby, consider baby’s stage of development. Leave arms free once the startle reflex disappears around 3 months.  It is essential to discontinue swaddling as soon as baby starts showing signs that they can begin to roll, usually between 4-6 months of age but sometimes younger
