Winter is on the way and we're thinking of all the lovely winter rituals we'll get to enjoy with our little ones again.

Like warm milk and a bedtime story. Or snuggles on the lounge by a crackling fire.

It's also the time of year that we get lots of questions about how you can keep your little one warm at night time, so keep reading as we've got some handy tips on keeping your little one warm and cosy as the temperatures drop.

1. Check your room temperature

It's important to take note of the room temperature throughout the night so you can dress your baby appropriately.

Red Nose does not recommend a specific room temperature for healthy babies. However, you may find the most 'comfortable' temperature for sleeping is somewhere between 18°C and 20°C. If this isn't achievable fear not - we've got you covered with our merino wool range of swaddles and sleeping bags suitable for a wide range of temperatures.

2. Do I need a swaddle sack or a sleeping bag?

For newborn babies who need to be swaddled, our award winning swaddle sack is designed for safe sleep, and is made from 100% merino wool which has unique temperature regulating properties - newborn babies do not have the ability to regulate their own temperature like adults do. Swaddling is recommended for newborn babies because it contains your baby's arms, so they won’t wake themselves during the night with the startle reflex. You can read more about swaddling here. It's essential to discontinue swaddling once baby shows signs of rolling.

For babies who prefer to sleep with their arms out, or babies who are starting to roll, our merino wool sleeping bags are for you. Our sleeping bags have clever adjustable sizing so they grow with your baby, and are available in 2 sizes, Baby (3m-2 years) and Toddler (2-4 years).

3. What weight do I need?

Billie + Bobbie Merino Wool Sleeping Bags are available in an all season and winter weight, so you can choose the option that suits your home and the season!

Our winter sleeping bag is recommended for winter, suitable for room temperatures between 15 - 20°C, or if you have the heating on or live in a warmer region/house, opt for the all season sleeping bag, suitable for room temperatures between 18 - 28°C.

4. Layer Up

To accomodate the changing temperatures between seasons and from day to night, layering is your best friend! This means you can invest in less different weight sleeping bags, and simply adjust the layers underneath following our handy temperature guide - how to dress for bed.

Our new range of Sweet Cheeks Merino layers are made from 100% superfine merino wool, and make the ultimate all rounder for your little one. They make the perfect base layer on cold wintery days or under PJ's and a sleep sack at night time.

Available in a singlet and long sleeve bodysuit, features include:

  • Merino wool helps to regulate body temperature, so these can be worn all year round
  • Envelope neckline makes dressing easy
  • Extra enforcement at the snaps ensure they last a long time
